Spedition Diez is taking the next step towards electrifying its fleet with a dedicated charging hub. To ensure stable, efficient and sustainable operation, the company relies on smart charging and fleet management from IO-Dynamics. The charging infrastructure was set up by LichtBlick eMobility.
The site is equipped with three 400 kW hyperchargers, each with two charging points, and a 450 kWp photovoltaic system. The world’s largest free-standing solar canopy provides both shelter and renewable energy for operations.
Charging heavy-duty trucks requires high power and involves complex load profiles. This is where IO-Dynamics’ software comes in: it orchestrates energy flows in real time, prioritises self-generated solar power, enables multiple trucks to charge in parallel without overloading the grid, and integrates, in collaboration with Rabot Energy, dynamic electricity tariffs into the charging schedule. The result is an integrated system that ensures reliable fleet charging.
A site analysis highlights the impact of intelligent energy management. With just four e-trucks, annual electricity consumption already triples compared to operations without electrification. Without control, only a few vehicles charging at once would overload the connection. Smart charging, however, allows efficient use of the existing infrastructure: peak loads are reduced by around 36%. The charging management from IO-Dynamics also integrates dynamic electricity tariffs from Rabot Energy, ensuring the fleet charges during low-price periods. This delivers clear advantages in terms of cost and energy efficiency. In the future, a two-megawatt battery storage system will buffer solar power and make it available during charging hours. Combined with load management and dynamic tariffs, this setup reduces energy costs by around 25%.
Spedition Diez started with two Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, with the fleet set to expand to seven e-trucks by 2026. From day one, the charging infrastructure has been designed to support growth.
“For us as a logistics company, it’s crucial that electric mobility remains economically predictable. With IO-Dynamics we can make the best use of solar energy, avoid peak loads and keep our operating costs under control.”
– Matthias Diez, Managing Partner, Spedition Diez
Together with Rabot Energy (www.rabot.energy) as the electricity supplier, the project demonstrates how dynamic electricity tariffs can be integrated into the intelligent charging strategy and charging load management in order to operate electric trucks reliably and cost-effectively.
